Suzanne's Spotlight: Jolly on sadness

The Repository is one of the most remarkable little nooks I’ve discovered on the web. At first it was the Repository of Strange Dreams, a collection of mesmerizing tales recounted from experiences in the land of forty winks. Now it’s the Repository of Sad Things, a place where e-zine ingenue Carma Jolly stows all the many "things too small to talk about" that make her blue. Soon the Repository with shift again, delving into another realm of Jolly’s rich imagination. I e-interviewed Jolly about her project:

BP: Why the switch from strange dreams to sad things?

CJ: I had the dreams up for two years and decided to change the theme. That was my intention from the beginning - to create a series of different kinds of repositories. The dreams had a nice run, so they went on for awhile.

BP: When will you update the Repository again?

CJ: The Repository for Sad Things will be a shorter run. (Can’t say exactly how long, as this is a one-person show and subject to my creative up and down swings.) I’m going to add a few more interactive pieces first. The next one will involve a tiny mermaid that I knitted. I also created a pet mercat for her.

The next Repository is going to be a larger undertaking: the Repository for Strange and Beautiful Sounds. I’m going to take ordinary sounds and extract music from them. The first will likely be an extract of my brother’s voice. He has Spina Bifida and was originally only supposed to live three weeks. He is now almost 27 years old. I'm also going to ask folks to send me MP3s of ordinary sounds from their lives that I will also turn into music.

BP: Is the Repository an online gallery of sorts?

CJ: I’ve never thought of it like that - it’s more like a little corner where I can create and if other people want to look and take part, that’s all the better.
